ROME – Pope Francis, 88, has faced an unexpected health setback while receiving treatment at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. The Vatican confirmed on Friday, February 28, 2025, that the Pope suffered a sudden bronchospasm crisis, temporarily worsening his condition.

The Holy Father was initially hospitalized on February 14 due to a severe respiratory tract infection that later led to complications. According to Vatican officials, the bronchospasm episode caused significant breathing difficulty, similar to an asthma attack, and was accompanied by vomiting while inhaling air.

Medical Intervention and Current Condition

Following the crisis, medical personnel swiftly cleared the Pope’s airways and provided non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Despite the severity of the situation, the Vatican assured that Pope Francis remained conscious throughout the episode.

A senior Vatican official, who spoke anonymously, stated that the Pope’s breathing difficulties were brief, and he was assisted with a thin mask covering his nose and mouth. Doctors estimate that it will take 24-48 hours to fully evaluate his condition.

Recent Health Struggles

This development comes just days after a previous Vatican statement indicated that the Pope had successfully battled a complex infection caused by multiple microorganisms. His most recent major breathing crisis before this occurred on February 22, and he had shown no recurrence until Friday.

Pope Francis has generally maintained stable health over the past two years. However, his respiratory system remains vulnerable due to a past bout of pleurisy during his youth, which led to the partial removal of one of his lungs.

Impact on Vatican Activities

The Vatican has not disclosed the expected duration of the Pope’s hospitalization. However, it has been confirmed that he will not be leading the Church’s upcoming annual Ash Wednesday service on March 5. This event, marking the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season leading to Easter Sunday, will instead be presided over by senior Vatican officials.

This latest health episode raises concerns about Pope Francis’ ability to maintain his demanding schedule. Over the years, he has been known for his tireless work advocating for social justice, peace, and interfaith dialogue. While his health struggles have occasionally forced him to limit certain activities, the Pope has consistently demonstrated resilience.

Doctors will continue closely monitoring Pope Francis’ condition to determine the next steps in his treatment. The Vatican remains hopeful for his recovery and has assured the faithful that updates will be provided as needed.
